This independent itinerary will showcase the iconic TranzAlpine – one of the world’s great scenic train trips from Christchurch to Greymouth, with self-drive independence from Greymouth to Punakaiki along the spectacular West Coast, through Marlborough wine country to Blenheim.
Help deliver the mail on the Queen Charlotte Sounds, and spot whales in Kaikoura. Packages can be customised for longer duration or upgraded accommodations.
Day 1 Christchurch train station – Greymouth – Punakaiki
Alight the TranzAlpine train in Christchurch - patchwork farmland of the Canterbury Plains, climbing into the alpine scenery on a series of spectacular Viaducts, Arthurs Pass, and descend through sub-tropical rain forest to Greymouth. Collect your rental car in Greymouth and head north to Punakaiki Resort for overnight accommodation. B
Day 2 Punakaiki – Renwick – Blenheim
Travel up the coast and over to Blenheim through the dominant wine region of Marlborough, with many of the wineries in the Renwick area, and your included guided visit to Clos Henri Wine Estate* – garnering 10 generations of vintners. Overnight accommodation at Chateau Marlborough. B
Day 3 Blenheim – Picton – Blenheim
Picton for the day - wander the town, before your afternoon excursion in the Queen Charlotte Sounds, onboard the only official licensed NZ Post Rural Delivery service boat. Share the excitement and insight into everyday life of communities and locals as the skipper delivers mail, freight and groceries to the families who live in the various bays, inlets and coves of the sounds. Day 4 Blenheim – Kaikōura
Kaikōura – a place where tectonic plates collide, towering peaks fall to the sea and ocean currents converge, luring an abundance of marine wildlife, the most famous being the Giant Sperm Whale. Includes whale watching scenic flight. Overnight at The Fairways at Ocean Ridge. B
Day 5 Kaikōura – Christchurch
Head south enroute via the Waipara region well known for its vineyards and wine tasting. Drop off your rental car in Christchurch. B
